Summer journey...........

Bev and I started off on a two month journey for the summer, and I'm planning on using this forum as a sort of journal of our trip. I have some catching up to do as it's now day 4 and I'm just starting so hang in there.

We took off Monday morning (June 6th 2010) at dawn heading towards Davenport, Iowa for a couple of family reunions on the 12th and 13th of June and a week or so there to visit with family and friends. After spending a week or so in the Quads the plan is to be back in Des Moines, Iowa for RAGBRAI with Bev's brother Mark, niece's Christina and Luara and nephew John and the rest of the team of bikers for this world famous great bike ride across Iowa by July 23rd or 24th. Bev and I have volunteered the RV as "Team Pokey Spokes" support vehicle for this event. This will be what we understand to be a week long party across the state of Iowa and we're looking forward to the adventure! Between say June 20th approximately and having to be back in Des Moines your guess is as good as mine as to where we'll end up, so stay tuned for updates as to where we've been and are going during that time.

Mileage upon starting out was 22,401 and our initial fill up with gas was $117 and propane was an additional $62.66. Our first stop was Gallup, New Mexico for gas at 22,720.5 that's 319 miles and gas mileage of 6.46...........($131.50) not that great, but up the hill into Flagstaff was a climb as you know. Stopped and ate and played at the Navajo Casino (Fire Rock), meal was just OK and gaming sucked so on we went. No RV park tonight, pulled on and got some sleep on the road with some truckers.

Next stop was Taos, NM to gas up again at mileage 23,000 (280 miles @ 6.37 mpg) at a cost of $114.55. After spending what seemed like 2 hours navigating in and around Taos trying to find a gas station we "fit" in and away through narrow streets we head out of town towards Colorado via hwy 64 towards Angel Fire..............a great and beautiful drive through Rio Grande Gorge Canyon. That drive would have been a really great ride if you were on a Harley or in a Corvette but really slow going in a motor home let me tell you!

Next stop was Castle Rock, Co. outside of Denver at mileage 23,308 (7.12 mpg at a cost of $105.01) and then drove on to just between Ogallala and North Platte, NE. where we stopped in agian a rest area rather than RV park. Gas and go in North Platte at 23,608 (300 miles at 7.059 mpg @ $115) Having to be in Davenport by the weekend and wanting to be at West Lake park in Davenport to park the RV we needed to get there before the weekend to get a spot since they take no reservations. The rest of the trip will be more stops and all at RV parks for the evenings and mornings you can bet on that! We made it to Stuart, Iowa for gas once more, mileage was 23,989.2, that's another 381.2 miles (6.6 mpg @ $147.35). We drove on into Des Moines and spent last night in the Adventure Land RV park for $35/night, very nice place and would stay here again. Bev's brother Mark came to the RV and we had a salad, glass of wine and some berries and talked for a few hours................a very good nights sleep and now it's morning and I'm waiting for Bev to awake for breakfast before we head to Davenport and our next stop.

This initial entry is rather lengthly, but I'm caught up and the rest should be more in the short but sweet category!
